Meinke Flesseman
Portimão
Born in Holland, lives and works in the Algarve in Portugal, and is greatly influenced by her natural surroundings and her relationship with the land.
MessageMeinke Flesseman was born in Amsterdam, but her childhood and adolescence were spent in the Algarve. A few years later she returned to her hometown, and also lived in Moscow, where she studied Fine Arts.
According to Meinke, living in the Algarve is a painter's dream, especially when it comes to light — as we can see in her series “Water Paintings”. In these aquatic landscapes we see how the sun's rays reflect and ripple in the sea, or illuminate the bathers who are cooling off.
The Algarve is also synonymous with home, and where she has always been inspired: “I had a carefree childhood. We had many animals in the house where we lived. Dogs, cats, chickens and a donkey whose best friend was a goat.” It was there that this familiarity and complicity was born. Animals are part of her most elementary memories, and this is reflected in her work, characterized by capturing moments through expressive brushstrokes full of movement.
In her most recent works, she represents the landscape, the greens, the flowers and seeks to convey the well-being that nature offers us.
As a visual artist, Meinke Flesseman works primarily through painting. In recent years she has also produced ceramic pieces as well as tile panels.
Statement
“The Algarve is a painter's dream: the light, the climate and the languid atmosphere combined with historic village scenes and dramatic coastline makes for a rich variety of subject matter. As an artist, one is always discovering something fresh and new every day here’.
