They are an alum of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA) and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (MA) and has been a medical and biological illustrator since 2000. In addition, they completed their BS at Eastern Michigan University in 2009 and their PhD in Human Anatomy & Cell Biology (with a focus in the eye) in 2012 at Wayne State School of Medicine in Detroit. For ten years, they have been employed in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Michigan as their multi-media specialist and medical illustrator.
Megan has been a practicing artist for over 20 years and, when not in the studio, spends a large amount of time collecting objects for their works, listening to podcasts, audiobooks, and music, petting all manner of critter, eating her partner’s legendary pretzels, loving on her son, and lifting heavy things and putting them back down.
In April of 2023, they opened Ypsi Art Supply, an independent art supply and creative gift emporium for the SE Michigan art community.
Statement
Megan’s work visually explores connections and blurs the lines between objects and the body.
Boundaries are man-made; there are no beginnings or endings in nature. Anatomy, biology, chemistry – all science – supports interconnectedness. Humans are pulled away from each other under false pretenses.
Megan celebrates multiplicity, familiarity, and connection through their drawings and paintings. Capturing the authenticity of their subjects through meticulous attention to structure, texture, lighting, and often over-looked qualities that are endless in their variety – bringing them to life on paper.
They carefully select each medium – graphite, carbon dust, watercolor, gouache, ink, oils – to evoke empathy and curiosity in the viewer and establish a profound and intimate connection with these “everyday” subjects and the human eye; driving home the message that nothing in this world is even remotely “commonplace”.
Travel and interactions with a broad range of people (and what surrounds them) helps Megan build a ever-expanding body of work that tells the modern human story and offers new perspectives on the human experience.
