"My goal is to bring out deep emotion in you. I paint mainly people because I find depth in each and every person I meet. The soul is hallowed ground. I hope to provide a glimpse into just what it is that makes that person important in this world. To give them a voice. To give them a name. To share their story." -Matt Fay, January, 2017
Born in 1972 in Dayton, Ohio, Matt Fay had a decision to make near the end of high school. Art school and a career in medicine both called to him.
Matt chose to become a doctor. After years of education, residency, and a 12 year successful and fulfilling career as a physician, Matt was riding his mountain bike one day in 2014 and had an accident, an accident that would change the trajectory of his and his family’s life.
While the resultant head injury ended his medical career prematurely, Matt found something astounding. The right side of his brain opened wide. He took painting classes, read as much as he could get his hands on, and appreciated as many works of art as he could find.
In late 2015, Matt opened a studio in Palisade, Colorado. His passion for painting took off. He quickly learned that his early love of painting was shining like the sun. The richness of oil paint was like none other. The richness of the human spirit that Matt found in medicine suddenly jumped onto the canvas. People, their individuality and their emotions, were and still are the focus of his art.
It is not often that a person has a chance to have two wonderful careers. The unifying theme in these two professions is Matt’s relationship with people. The sharing of people, both at the edges of life, and the edges of emotion fills his heart with gratitude. The chance to share their story fills his heart with joy.
