Recycling the Sacred Circle
After carving hard woods for years, artist Zarco Guerrero started to recognize interesting specimens of exotic woods in second hand stores. Overtime, he continued to collect and grow his collection of bowls, platters, and plates and he began carving them with ancient patterns and symbols to honor them with a new dignity and life. The patterns used within this collection are inspired by Ancient Native cultures, particularly the basket and pottery designs of the Huhugam.
"Carving these motifs in the round presents a special challenge when striving for symmetry, balance, and perfection. When completed, each piece serves as a meditation or prayer recited in the esoteric lanuage passed on from our ancestors." - Artists Zarco Guerrero
More than half of the pieces in this collection were purchased secondhand and restored back to life. The circle is a universal, sacred symbol that harmonizes us with the Earth. This exhibition celebrates the Sacred Circle and our place within.
This online exhibit was made possible through a grant from the NALAC - The National Association of Latino Arts & Culture
