Part of the Ollin Yoliztli Calaca Series. Masks created over the duration of 3-4 years. While creating this collection, the artist developed and perfected his own style of painting for the calaca masks.
Ollin Yoliztli is a Phoenix based dance group that performs traditional Mexican Folklore dances. Cultural Coalition has partnered with them for decades, educating the public and keeping Mexican traditions alive within the community.
Calaca mask with off-white painted base. Border of eyes painted in orange. Forehead painted primarily with a blue design. Purple and yellow circle painted in the center of the forehead with a red gem. Smaller, yellow circles painted on the left and right side of the larger circle. Blue, horizontal, raindrop-shaped design on each cheek with a yellow circle painted inside. Eye-shape painted on the chin outlined in orange, with a blue and yellow circle in the center and a purple gem embellishment. Border of teeth outlined in pink. Nostrils painted purple.
