Part of the Ollin Yoliztli Calaca Series. Masks created over the duration of 3-4 years. While creating this collection, the artist developed and perfected his own style of painting for the calaca masks.
Ollin Yoliztli is a Phoenix based dance group that performs traditional Mexican Folklore dances. Cultural Coalition has partnered with them for decades, educating the public and keeping Mexican traditions alive within the community.
Calaca mask with off-white painted base. Designs painted with a purple, green, and blue color scheme. Focal designs painted in purple. Purple, southwest-like lines painted near the eyebrows. Purple swirled line painted under each cheek. Purple, zig-zag shaped line painted on the chin. Small triangle shapes painted on the sides of the forehead in blue and on the center in green. Outer border of teeth outlined in pink, inner border outlined in red. Red gem embellishments on the cheeks. Yellow gem embellishment on the chin, blue gem embellishment between the eyebrows, and four gem embellishments on the forehead.
