Part of the Ollin Yoliztli Calaca Series. Masks created over the duration of 3-4 years. While creating this collection, the artist developed and perfected his own style of painting for the calaca masks.
Ollin Yoliztli is a Phoenix based dance group that performs traditional Mexican Folklore dances. Cultural Coalition has partnered with them for decades, educating the public and keeping Mexican traditions alive within the community.
Calaca mask with off-white painted base. Pink, purple, yellow, and blue color scheme. Top border of eyes painted in pink, with pink lines extending to the nose. Upside down rain drop shape painted in blue with a yellow border and red gem at the center of forehead. Similar raindrops painted on the cheeks and on the sides of the mouth. Purple eyebrows and nostrils. Purple swirly line on the forehead. Outer border of teeth outlined in pink, inner border in dark red. Small, blue stroke marks above and below the mouth.
