Aztec/Conquistador. Plaster bandage, paper clay, painted with acrylics. Part of the Sun Serpent Series.
Full face mask of male figures. Left side represents a Spanish conquistador. Right side represents and and indigenous Aztec. The two sides are separated by a painted black line. The left conquistador side is painted white with light brown/blonde colored eyebrow, mustache, sideburns and beard that are raised sculpted with carved hairlines. The right Aztec side is painted a dark tan with orange undertones and has a sculpted ear on the side. Ear has an earring that is round and painted turquoise with gold in the middle and a silver piece of metal in the center. Face has slightly raised sculpted eyebrow painted black, a painted light black thin mustache, and a slightly raised sculpted goatee that is painted black on chin. There are three puncture hole on the right side of the forehead for where a hair piece was attached.
The Sun Serpent was a play produced by Childsplay, performed at Tempe Center for the Arts in 2011.
Artist and sculptor Zarco Guerrero made about 30 masks for the performance. All of the masks were made directly on the actors to better fit them during the performance.
