Mask Alive Art Collection
Mesa, Arizona
A space for creative, artistic expression that exhibits a global collection of masks and art in celebration of the human cultural practice of storytelling.
MessageBorn in Rockford, IL., Alex grew up surrounded by art, as both his parents were artists themselves. Masks and sculptures were focal points throughout their home - ranging from Asian theatre, African, Balinese, Tiki, and other “folk art” styles. This inspired Alex to draw, paint, and sculpt from a young age.
Alex credits moving to Arizona and meeting Zarco as the start of his creative journey for his love of mask making. They became a source of inspiration for him. Especially the incredibly detailed fantastical Mexican Folk masks from Guerrero Mexico.
“It has been an immense privilege to meet and learn from renowned mask maker Zarco Guerrero. His skills as a performer and artist have given me a deeper understanding into the world of the mask, and how to forge them
in various ways.”
Alex credits his apprenticeship and working with Cultural Coalition for giving him new making masks skills and a new understanding of how to wear them.
“To dance and move with the mask is a wonderful way to get lost within one’s self. To be free and experience a sense of weightlessness away from the everyday, and into another world.”
Mission: Cultural Coalition, Inc. connects communities and generations to ancestral knowledge and practices through artistic cultural preservation and programs that celebrate Chicano, Latiné, and Indigenous heritages.
