“Fancy Frills,” a photo-realistic drawing by Marshall K. Harris, depicts a 1920s vintage western saddle from
M.L. Leddy Saddle Shop, originally in Brady, Texas (and later in San Angelo and Fort Worth). One in series of life-size
saddle drawings that capture romanticized, storied elements of the Old West, the image stirs up nostalgia for a cowboy
world of long ago.
This saddle is one of 3 designed and created for the Leddy brothers and was built before 1920. This particular saddle
was made for M.L. Led and can be found in the Leddy’s western wear store located in downtown Fort Worth TX. The
original age of the saddle can be estimated by the saddle makers mark which is found on the stirrup strap. It has the
name of the Saddlery company as well as the location, San Angelo, Texas. The Leddy company relocated to Fort Worth
Texas around 1921-22 and so we know the age of the saddle due to the mark.
Mr. Harris won the coveted Hunting Art Prize in 2013 for his “Round Up,” a drawing of the B.F. Smith & Sons saddle maker’s Rose Bowl Parade saddle, circa 1940-1942. “Round-Up” was acquired by the Hunting Corporation for their
corporate collection and hangs in the Houston corporate headquarters.
