Marli Thibodeau
Rockland, ME
I'm an artist continuously responding to the instinctual connection to the present moment both on and off the canvas, living in Rockland Maine.
MessageMarli Thibodeau is an emerging artist who was born in Marlboro, NY. Her introduction to art emerged from a combination of boredom and freedom - creating a spaciousness in which to explore drawing, painting and photography. This liberty has fueled a lifelong pull to artistic expression. As a teenager, she painted legendary murals on bedroom walls. Studying painting and commercial art in High School, she credits her early teachers for cultivating her love of art.
Along the way she has studied movement as an art form; spending a decade blending hard and soft movement in the dojo. Marli is currently a conscious dance practitioner and teacher of www.pathofazul.com
She returned to visual arts in 2015, studying photography with Karen Divine and conceiving the Being Set Free project, a global collaboration around a central theme. (https://www.karendivinephotography.com/marlis-story-being-set-free/)
She began painting again in 2018, and in 2019 she began studying with Steven Aimone, focusing on her emerging body of work.
Thibodeau finds that movement reveals our inner state, a reflection of our interior world both in painting and dance. Thibodeau says: " I am continuously responding to what is here in the moment- to the instinctual connection of what is rising on the inside and how it is expressing in relation to what is on the canvas, creating an ever expanded sense of self "
Her paintings do not reference recognizable form and the lack of clear references are key elements in her work
The works are composed of opaque and transparent layers representing the ongoing dialog between painter and painting.
By questioning what is here now, present within, she creates intense personal moments on the canvas.
Her work contains themes of exploration, movement, and non-objective composition
The study of light + movement
Color as a language of internal and visual expression

Statement
Marli Thibodeau - Artist Statement
A dialog with life.
By creating layered textures of opaque and transparent movements on paper or canvas, I use mixed media as a visual dance, expressing the tapestry of life.
I begin by tuning in to what is rising in me, laying the first marks. I continue a dialog of reflection and response, allowing the painting to unfold. Like wandering into unmapped territory, with no vision or destination in mind, I remain open to the possibilities.
At some point in the process, both myself and the painting begin moving towards a sense of resolution. When this fails to arise, or I am feeling ridiculously unsatisfied, I will often begin again, sometimes making dramatic moves to disrupt the course of the painting.
Making a painting is taking a journey. The process is echoed in the way I create a movement class. I listen for what is alive in me at the moment and respond with gestures and color.
I'm captivated by how light creates aliveness in the visual arts, and how breath animates aliveness in movement and dance. Both energies expressing a moment in time; a reflection of how our inner world engages with our environment.
I am continually reacting to the instinctual feeling rising within me and responding to what is on the canvas, thereby creating an expanded sense of self.
My work contains themes of exploration, movement and non-objective composition;
studies of light + movement and color as a language of inner and visual expression.
While working, I consider the impact of the painting; creating a conversation around:
Listening – What is it that I, the artist, want? What is the painting asking for?
Allowing – The moment and the painting to unfold without expectation.
Opening – To new possibilities and creative expression.
Moving Towards – The discovery of unexpressed nuances and emotional connections with each piece.
