The Malibu Pier was built in 1905 for to support the operations of Frederick Hastings Rindge's Malibu Rancho who shipped hides, grains, fruit, and other agricultural products.
In 1934, the pier was opened to the public for pier and charter fishing and in 1938 the pier was extended to it’s current length of 780 feet.
During World War II the pier served as a U.S. Coast Guard lookout station and in 1960, an artificial reef was constructed in the ocean about one mile southeast of the pier in an attempt to protect it.
Over the years the pier has been battered and damaged by various storms and changed hands from private, to state to local ownership. The pier also housed the famous Alice's Restaurant also known for the Arlo Guthrie hit song named after the restaurant. The restaurant operated from 1972 to the closure of the pier in the 1990s form heavy storm damage.
Now listed as a Los Angeles Point of Historical Interest the pier is currently owned and maintained by the State of California.
