Mark Lyken is an award-wining filmmaker, painter, and electronic musician based in Glasgow, Scotland

Mark’s creative journey began in Dundee in the mid-1980s, when he first started writing graffiti. Over time, his pieces grew into large-scale abstract murals and a distinctive studio practice that continues to evolve. Today, Mark’s work is characterised by an instinctive sense of rhythm, movement and composition, informed by decades of looking, listening and responding to the environments he inhabits.

As a self-shooting and editing filmmaker, Mark’s work often results from long-term collaborations with communities across the UK and internationally. He has undertaken commissions for BBC Arts, LUX Scotland, Cryptic Glasgow, Alchemy Film & Arts, Radiophrenia, Screen Scotland, British Council, and more.

His audiovisual performances and moving image installations have been presented nationally and internationally, including Brazil, Taiwan, South Korea, Mexico, India, Poland, Sweden, and widely across the UK.

Mark releases music, sound art, and harsh noise under is own name and a variety of pseudonyms, working with a roster of independent labels including; Important Records, Cloudchamber Recordings, Time Released Sound, Falt, Broken20, AAD, Czaszka Records, Verz, Gamma Proforma, and curates Soft Error, his own occasional cassette label.

He is a British Film Editors (BFE) member, runs Afternoon, a film production company and creative studio, and is a tutor for the MA Film Practice, an international online programme with Arts University Bournemouth.

Across film, sound and painting, Mark’s practice has long been defined by collaboration, curiosity and an ability to reveal new perspectives on familiar landscapes.
