The piece "Intersecting Cylinders" was inspired by a visit to the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris France. Before the advent of modern digital computers, mathematicians and scientists would use physical models to visualise their studies.
The beauty of these models stayed with me as I constructed this sculpture. An industrial bearing sits on top of a steel pyramid base holding a cross that supports two intersecting cylinder delineated by colourful cords.
The industrial bearing adds a kinetic element to the piece. The play of lines and shadows while spinning in sunlight is mesmerising.
The juxtaposition of hard steel with soft cord to provide a shape is a reminder that visualization took many forms before the digital age.
