The God Boxes is a body of works strongly influenced by archeology, specifically sacred containers. The original concept for this body arose from an observation of small clay boxes excavated in the Levant, present day Israel. It is speculated that these boxes had contained sacred texts
My introduction to the term God Boxes comes from Simon Schama’s The Story of the Jews. In it he relates the discovery of [two arks], the archaeologist to whom he speaks refers to them as “God Boxes”. I became fascinated with the term and its implications of [God], a God, according to Schama, "... with neither face or form, …but many names”
How does one express the concept of being, much less one which cannot be expressed, even the name cannot be uttered. How does this entity appear? How does one give form to that which has no earthly form?
