The painting “Dimensions of personality” is my attempt at expressing in visual form the archetype coined the shadow by the psychiatrist Carl Jung. These shadow tendencies, seen as personalities within the unconscious may include aggressive impulses, shameful experiences, immoral urges, fears, irrational wishes, unacceptable sexual desires. They often are common to all but unacceptable to the person therefore repressed, steeped in dark corners of our unconscious.
It is my experience, in years of working with individual in therapy, that repressing these hidden aspects of ourselves only tend to strengthen them. The energy it takes to repress them robs us of joy. Brought to the light they often are like dandelions blown away by the wind. They have no strength to hold on.
