Marie Marfia is a pastel artist living in Florida. She loves painting waves, skeletons, the woods, and people.
Currently, Marie is working on several series: Greetings from St. Augustine, featuring campy skeleton tourists capering on and around St. Augustine landmarks; Belly Dancers, paintings of a local belly dancing troupe that explore the joy of movement and music within a close knit group of women; Wave Portraits, paintings about the ocean, one wave at a time; and Julington Durbin Preserve, paintings about walking every day in the wild woods of northeast Florida.
Marie spent a lot of time and energy mucking about in several different colleges before rolling up her sleeves and getting her BFA from Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She continued to work as a graphic designer, as well as honing her fine art skills as a daily painter.
Marie is one of eleven children born to hard working parents in the tiny town of Fennville, Michigan. She was the first girl after seven boys, so, not having a name picked out and her mom being unconscious at the time, her father and brothers decided to draw a name out of a hat. Fortunately, Marie’s mom woke up in time to declare, “I’m naming her after my mother,” and that was that, except the boys still called her Mitzi for years afterward. She currently lives and works in Jacksonville, Florida with her husband, Steve Oliver, and has three brilliant and beautiful children and two happy dogs.
