This painting is part of my Renaissance series. The idea for the painting is inspired by Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Ceiling like the Cartoon for the Sistine Chapel Ceiling is. Othe sources are modern. The graffiti text comes from graffiti I found on waterside delict buildings when I lived in Williamsburg back in the 90’s. I put the painting title on it as graffiti because fresco work always reminds me of graffiti in its freshness. As with Cartoon the figure and its accoutrements are modern. In the original the Libyan Sybil is reading a great tome; in my painting the Sybil is reading from an iPad and an iPhone. As I often do, I also pulled items from my model’s life into the artwork. This model is an architect so of course I had to include the golden ratio in the painting.
While I do use some of my usual cadmium colors but most of the colors of this painting reference Michelangelo’s Libyan Sybil.
