While I was bedridden recuperating from a serious injury, the only way I could paint was digitally, which for me is always pure experimentation.
For “Koyaanisqatsi,” I used one of my digital amalgams (made from several layers of digital photos of my original paintings and painting starts, adjusted variously as the spirit moved me) as my “canvas,” onto which I spontaneously painted, experimenting with a variety of brushes in Procreate, mimicking several different mediums — until my intention became clear to me.
Although I felt joy while making this painting, it would not respond to any other interpretation: it could not escape my belief that our world — our warming world — is seriously out of whack. Although our Earth is still achingly beautiful, impossibly colorful, and unfailingly inspirational, something is seriously amiss: off-kilter.
