Margie Woods
Los Angeles, CA
Mixed media artist exploring self-connection and resilience through layered mark-making, intuitive line, and text.
MessageMargie Woods is a mixed media artist whose work centers on self-connection, emotional resilience, and learning how to stay present through change. Her paintings emerge from an intuitive, process-driven practice that prioritizes listening over planning and honesty over polish. Using layered mark-making, expressive line, text, and asemic writing, she creates visual records of lived experience rather than fixed narratives.
Woods’ work is deeply informed by long periods of reflection, personal healing, and creative inquiry. Her process often mirrors internal states such as uncertainty, trust, rupture, and return, allowing tension and resolution to coexist on the surface. Rather than aiming for perfection or clarity, her work holds space for ambiguity and becoming.
At the core of her practice is the belief that creative expression is a powerful tool for reconnection. Her paintings invite viewers to slow down, feel, and recognize their own inner landscapes within the layers.
Statement
Painting has been integral in my healing. It is where I can slow down enough to listen and stay in relationship with myself, especially during periods of uncertainty or change.
My process is intuitive and responsive, built through layered mark-making, expressive line, text, and asemic writing. I work without a fixed plan, allowing repetition, interruption, and erasure to guide the piece forward. The marks function as fragments of language and sensation, recording what is felt rather than what is resolved.
Much of this work emerges from moments of challenge, reflection, and reorientation. Painting allows me to remain present when clarity is unavailable and to rebuild trust through attention rather than control. I am interested in what happens when I resist polishing or explaining and instead allow complexity and vulnerability to stay visible.
The finished paintings are not conclusions. They are records of presence, of listening, and of the ongoing process of coming back to myself.
