Alejandro Poli, Jr., better known as “Man One”, was born in Los Angeles, California to Mexican immigrant parents and the oldest of three children. His first languages were Spanish and art.
In 1987 he began painting graffiti on the streets of Los Angeles. He quickly graduated into creating large public murals and became interested in putting his art onto canvas. He then went on to Loyola Marymount University where Man One earned his B.A. in fine arts. His artwork has been shown in many museums, including the Getty, The Cheech, Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Latin American Art and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He has executed commissioned work for LA Metro, Coca-Cola, Microsoft, MTV, Disney, Delta Airlines, LA Kings and Nike. His work is very well collected privately and in the collections of established museums and arts organizations.
Socially conscious and community-focused, Man One was officially recognized by the US State Department for his dedication to promoting international understanding and cultural exchange through the arts. His practice serves as inspiration for many involved in the global graffiti art scene.
Statement
For me, art is language and justice: each painting is an act of empowerment. My trained hand and activist heart converge in murals that build identity and unity. In works commissioned for institutions, public spaces, and grassroots initiatives—from Los Angeles to Kathmandu—I channel graffiti’s rebellious spirit into socially resonant narratives, using portraiture and lettering as tools of visibility and inclusion. My Southern California-based studio remains a launch point for my global creations and vibrant public projects, all galvanized by the belief that art can transform individuals, connect cultures, and elevate voices.
