Malcolm Dewey

Contemporary South African Impressionist landscapes — coastal light, Karoo silence, and the expressive beauty of everyday places.
MessageStatement
Malcolm Dewey’s paintings are rooted in the landscape of South Africa, especially the coastal towns, quiet beaches, rock pools, open fields and sunlit farmlands that shape daily life in the Eastern Cape and beyond. His work is not about recording a place in photographic detail, but about capturing the sensation of being there — the warmth of the sun, the movement of air, the shimmer of reflected light and the deep shadows that give a scene its drama.
Living in a coastal town, Malcolm is drawn to the changing moods of the sea and shoreline. Rock pools at low tide, fishing boats, beach paths, coastal vegetation and wide skies offer endless inspiration. These are familiar places, yet through paint they become something more permanent and poetic. A simple stretch of beach or a cluster of rocks becomes a study in colour, rhythm and light.
Beyond the coast, Malcolm’s attention turns inland to the countryside, the Karoo and the farmlands of South Africa. Here the appeal is different but equally powerful: thorn trees catching the late afternoon sun, dusty roads disappearing into distance, farm buildings held in sharp light, and hills softened by heat and atmosphere. These landscapes speak of stillness, resilience and space — qualities that are deeply connected to the South African experience.
Malcolm works in a contemporary loose Impressionist style, using generous paint, expressive brushwork and strong contrasts of light and shadow. Colour is central to his approach. Rather than simply describing what is seen, he uses colour to suggest energy, mood and memory. His paintings are filled with movement and texture, allowing the viewer to feel the hand of the artist in every mark.
For Malcolm, the true subject is always light. Whether it is sunlight breaking across a wave, a path glowing between trees or the golden edge of a Karoo hillside, light transforms the ordinary into something memorable. His paintings invite collectors to pause and reconnect with the beauty of the natural world — not as a distant ideal, but as something close, familiar and deeply felt.
These are paintings for collectors who value atmosphere, authenticity and the enduring appeal of landscape. They celebrate South African places with a contemporary eye, offering both a sense of home and a feeling of escape.
