Showing a strong interest in drawing and art from a young age, M. Jane Johnson started taking private painting lessons at 7 years old. She spent hours drawing and painting and won a number of awards as a young artist. Her love of art was carried through college where she went on to receive a BFA concentrating in painting and drawing. In college, she had several opportunities to study in Florence, Italy and Jane could often be found sitting on a street corner somewhere drawing the wonderful Italian scenery around her.
Jane worked as a draftsperson in HVAC design, a service representative for Virginia Power where she designed electrical services to many large commercial projects in Fairfax County, and as a business-to-business sales rep. She was in sales for over 20 years where she was a top sales rep but still took time to practice her art skills. Currently she is pursuing her certification as a color consultant for home and business. Over the years Jane has studied with a number of leading artist both through classes and workshops primarily with the wonderful educational programs offered by the Art League in Alexandria, VA.
For many years Jane worked in oil as a representational painter. She took an abstract workshop and fell in love with abstracts. Jane’s mixed media work incorporates her love of oil, acrylic, collage and drawing into a colorful, textured painting. People compliment her frequently on her use of color and strong color sense and children are delighted with the textural aspects of her work. She listens to music while painting and the rhythm and energy often appear in the art.
In 2011, Jane was trying to decide what to do next in her life when she received a call from Children’s National Medical Center commissioning her to paint 12 paintings for their new heart center. She jumped at the chance and took it as a sign to fully commit to her art career. Jane has a studio at the Workhouse Arts Center. Her work has been shown in both group and solo shows, and art fairs in the Mid-Atlantic. Her paintings are held in the permanent collection of the Children’s National Medical Center and privately.
