Louise Cutler Bio
"I consider one’s art an extension of one’s life. My work, whether painting, drawing, writing, gardening, or performing, is a visual or written translation of my life, feelings, people I have encountered, places I have been, and things I have seen." — Louise Cutler
Louise Cutler is a Fort Collins-based creationist, artist, vocalist, writer, and sculptor. Her work is motivated by a deep desire to create beauty that cultivates truth, peace, and harmony. She believes that art is a reflection of life, an expression of both personal experience and universal connection.
Ms. Cutler’s travels have been an integral part of her artistic journey, taking her to places such as Niger, Africa, Turkey, Ephesus, Cappadocia, Vienna, Slovakia, Egypt, and India. She has visited the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, the Egyptian Museum in Alexandria, Old Delhi, Agra, and Mumbai, as well as the National Gallery and Tate Gallery in London. In Paris, she explored The Louvre and the Musée Marmottan Monet, and in Rome, she immersed herself in the treasures of the Vatican, Galleria Borghese, and various churches. One of her greatest desires as an artist is to see the great masters' works that she has long studied.
Ms. Cutler’s work has been featured in Art Business News, Art World News, Edge of Faith, and Beyond Words Magazine. She was honored as one of Art Business News’s "Top Emerging Artists." Her painting Alone was recently exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London as part of their Summer Exhibition. She has also exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Museum of Science and Industry’s Black Creativity exhibit, The DuSable Museum of African American History, the Museum of Art in Fort Collins, and Sculpture in the Park, among many others.
In recent years, Ms. Cutler has focused her projects on community engagement, particularly centering on the Black cultural experience. She was the featured artist for Colorado State University's Social Injustice Through The Arts Program, where she worked with youth to explore themes of self-identity and expression through various artistic forms. This program focused on empowering young participants to express their individual experiences and identities through art. She is also a receptant the Westaff Grant for her community efforts in art development and engagement, which underscores her dedication to using art as a tool for building connections and empowering communities.
She also curated A Culture Preserved in The Black Experience, the first exhibition of Black/African American artists at the Museum of Art in Fort Collins in July 2022. Additionally, she is the founder and creator of the Beauty of Blackness Fine Art Show/Festival, a vibrant celebration of Black culture held annually in Fort Collins during Labor Day weekend.
Ms. Cutler is deeply committed to bringing diverse cultural expressions to the community and is currently looking to collaborate with the CSU Arts Museum to present another significant Black/African American art exhibit. She is also an active committee member for Fort Collins’ Juneteenth Celebration and Board Member of the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art.
"I believe in using every medium at my disposal as a form of creative expression, so I am in a continual state of creativeness." — Louise Cutler
Statement
Artist Statement
My work almost always begins with a figurative form, from which everything else grows organically around it. It’s as if the figure gives birth to the rest of the piece; without it, the painting cannot exist. I am a mixed-media, multicultural artist and sculptor with a focus on nature and the clothed human form. Simplicity, peace, harmony, and calm are the guiding principles that shape my creative process.
I believe that my art is born from the overflow of love, wisdom, peace, and faith given to me by my Heavenly Father. These gifts echo throughout my work, and my art aims to share these qualities with the world, bringing about positive change wherever it is experienced.
In my view, the artist must withdraw from the "what is" and embrace the "what if," the possibilities of something greater. Human perception is limited to what is seen with the eyes, but true creativity lies beyond sight—in insight. We must remove our blinders to perceive true reality, and in doing so, we can begin to transform the world around us.
My bronze pieces are birthed from my paintings. Each painting serves as an incubator for something greater. As I recreate the forms from my paintings in clay, they evolve into a new body of work, one that comes alive in my hands as a three-dimensional creation. This process mirrors the way our Creator formed us, shaping each new work from the original creation into something uniquely alive.
