The FlightPath series explores the materiality of graphite media whilst considering the plight of our less popular insects. The narrative is focused on wildlife corridors, the importance of a network of routes between habitats to ensure diversity, and aims to resolve the tension between abstraction and figuration while encouraging open discussion. This piece reflects on the loss of insects through human impact on the environment and the dislike of particular creatures because they interfere with our way of life. The "ghost" wasps, embossed into the paper signify the damage we have caused through negligence and ignorance of the insect world.
Slow looking. Next time a wasp invades your picnic, take a moment to look closely: the exquisite markings, the dainty legs and wavering antennae. How the wings support each movement as the mouth nibbles the meat into a tiny ball before drunkenly lifting off, carrying a piece almost half its weight and flying away to feed the young.
