Before I was a professional artist I was a wildlife biologist who specialized in birds. I was blessed to be chosen for the Texas A&M Center for Coastal Studies Artist in Residency program. My time on the island was marked by constant conflict between my scientist mind and my creative mind. There were new birds every day and it was very difficult to tear myself away from my field guide and binoculars and pay attention to painting. Black-bellied Whistling Ducks were a new life bird for me (a species that I had never seen before). I heard the distinctive call while I was cooking and ran outside to a big surprise. This is just one example of the many birds I saw.
