Endless fields of Lavender are a quintessential image of France, but after a cool Spring the fields were late. We had resigned ourselves to the fact that we were going to miss seeing them. When driving near Vallensole we could see the unmistakable colour in the distance and after a bit of backroad exploration we found some fields in full bloom. I loved the unexpected surprise of the Poppies intermingling with the Lavender; so much so that they became a main component of the painting.
