Statement
When I am painting or drawing, I am listening for the emotion and trying to be honest in my expression. I am exploring my memory, the history of my life, moments of my travels, my dreams, and the present — searching for a resolution that will probably never happen.
Nearly six years ago I was in an accident, and an accumulation of concussions incurred as a professional athlete caught up with me. I lost a way of being in the world that was my only reality. I also lost the ability to talk, read, write, count and be around other people. Most of those things eventually returned. I spent a lot of time alone and found solace in watercoloring preprinted postcards and in drawing shapes, one per page, coloring them in solid hues.
At one point I asked the neuropsychologist how to make decisions. She said, simply, “Go in the direction of what feels good.”
