About Lori Demand

Lori Demand is a self -taught Baton Rouge artist who works with acrylics and mixed media. She was born in Fort Worth, Texas and lived in Texas for 40 years.

Lori has always loved science and the arts, resulting in a unique voice blended with logic and spirit. She has a zest for adventure and a thirst for knowledge. Her work is influenced by the emotional responses and spiritual connections made from immersion in nature, especially flowers and water. She uses various tools and mediums to build rich texture in her pieces, mimicking the abundant textures found in nature

Statement

My work is inspired by nature’s power, beauty, and my connection to it. It draws me in and makes me feel energized, connected and at peace, like being home. Nature is always there with me and for me, never failing me like the air I breathe and my creator.

I mainly paint in abstraction with acrylics, but not always, to keep things interesting.  This provides me the freedom of non-conformity to expectations. It delivers a platform to paint my interpretation of nature’s message to humankind in a way that is authentically me.

I call myself a unique artist because I have always had a love for marching to the beat of my own drum. I create mainly with anything that isn’t a paintbrush, favoring silicone wedges and hands. I prefer to work quickly and intuitively, allowing my gut to guide decisions for color and strokes, a bit like listening to my soul speak to me. I paint layer after layer creating depth and intrigue, with each layer acting like a chapter of a story.  When finished, the individual layers which are of value on their own, are combined into a single work resulting in a painting with a mysterious story to tell.

Painting sets my soul on fire. When I was asked “what does your art mean to you,” the first word that popped in my head was survival. Painting provides the vehicle for self-discovery, therapy, storytelling, giving back, exploration, empowerment, and evolving into a better human.

Ultimately, creating art allows me a way to give back to the world more than I take from it.
