MessageAn Artistic Journey Across Oceans
Lony Maya Neubauer’s artistic journey is as unique as her work. Growing up on the picturesque island of Föhr in Northern Germany, her adventurous spirit eventually led her to the sunny shores of California. Now, she calls Vallejo, a charming waterfront community about 30 miles northeast of San Francisco, her home.
Born into an artistic family—her mother a Latin American ballroom dance teacher and her father a painter and merchant captain—Lony was surrounded by creativity from a young age. Although she didn’t initially follow in their footsteps, her love for clay began in junior high school and grew stronger over time. This passion and desire to work with clay again eventually led her to take a leap and enroll in a ceramics class in January 2018.
By October of the same year, Lony found her artistic haven at the Mare Island Art Studios, formerly known as the Coal Shed Art Studio, located on historic Mare Island. Here, she is part of a talented community of 18 resident artists working in various mediums. This diverse group provides support and camaraderie, regularly showcasing their work at the Tim Rose Gallery.
In 2023, Lony collaborated with the deYoung Museum, creating a series of four different types of mugs and cups, totaling 72 pieces for the museum gift shop during The de Young Open. This significant project highlights her growing reputation and the appeal of her work.
Lony Maya Neubauer’s journey and dedication to her craft make her a valuable member of this vibrant creative community. Her work, infused with Mid-Century Modern lines, vibrant colors, and abstract rhythms, truly stands out in the world of art.

Sculpting Joy: The Fusion of Function and Art in Ceramics
I see myself as a ceramic artist with a passion for creating functional and artistic work. While porcelain is my go-to material, I also enjoy working with other clay bodies. I love crafting unique pieces that capture the charm of mid-century modern and retro vibes, with a touch of abstract design, perfect for everyday use and as home decor.
In my work, I explore different forms and decoration techniques, often using vibrant colors and contrasting glazes to create a striking look. I also like to add personality with bright underglazes, intricate designs, and sometimes detailed patterns.
The heart of my artistry is the connection I build with collectors who appreciate my work. There’s a special moment when a piece feels complete, as if it’s ready to be held by a collector, placed as a centerpiece on a table, or featured as a standout decoration on a mantel. This moment of creative satisfaction drives my passion for ceramics.
Each of my creations is born from a deep love for the craft. I believe art should bring joy to both the artist and those who enjoy the pieces. My hope is that my ceramics not only bring happiness but also offer a unique and special quality, making each collector feel they have something truly one-of-a-kind and delightful.
