Lloyd Tabing is an American-born artist living and working in Sweden. His large-scale acrylic
abstract paintings explore nature’s energy and variability through a vibrant, evolving spectrum of
color. Built through numerous iterations on the canvas, his palettes emerge over time and are
layered with gestural marks, drawing, and texture, forming a unique visual language with each
painting.
Tabing’s process is instinctive and exploratory; a back-and-forth of what he describes as chaos
that continues until the painting begins to take shape and reveals what it wants to be. As a self-
taught artist, Lloyd values the freedom to develop outside conventional rules, allowing intuition
and experimentation to guide his practice.
Titles add an additional element to Tabing’s paintings. Often drawn from song lyrics, phrases, or
passages of literature he collects in a journal. The titles are intentionally open ended and non-
directional allowing the viewer to summon personal interpretation and dialogue.
Tabing’s works can be found internationally in both private and commercial collections.
Statement
I am an American abstract artist living and working in Sweden. My work is a vibrant
tapestry of personal accounts that capture fleeting moments and emotions. My paintings
are widely collected and can be found in both private and corporate collections
internationally.
Each piece acts as a short story woven from time, place, and deep personal feelings,
often reflecting my profound love of nature. I am captivated by certain elements in
nature that naturally catch my attention, leading me to ponder why some places
resonate while equally beautiful scenes remain unnoticed. These "noticed" places often
reveal unique interactions of color, movement, and textures, accompanied by
irregularities in light and sound. While I understand that capturing the full essence of
nature is unattainable, my aim is not replication but rather a personal representation of
what I see and feel.
I am essentially a reactionary painter. However, I begin each piece with an idea and
carry that through the entire painting process. I often start with a simple drawing or
mark-making to set a direction but let my instincts guide me from there. This process is
dynamic. I interact with the canvas, bringing my inner world to life through each
brushstroke. I layer and remove, exploring depth and texture and revealing hidden
layers beneath the surface. Carrying the initial idea throughout, I often continue to draw
directly onto the canvas with chalk or charcoal, occasionally leaving fragments
embedded in the wet paint.
Being a self-taught artist has afforded me the freedom to develop a unique style
unbounded by conventional techniques. Without the constraints of formal education, I've
forged my path through intuition and personal discovery. I cherish those moments when
I become entirely immersed in the act of painting, as it is during these uninhibited
phases that my work truly comes alive.
