Adaptive Horizons
Spurred by a move to the city from the suburbs, I used my new viewpoint to capture urban imagery and tucked them into abstracted landscapes.
These pieces consider how we process change in our lives & surroundings. They incorporate digital composite textures, digital photography, scans of handmade collage, encaustic monoprints, and collagraph prints to create an urban version, still familiar, of the view out the window.
Details
The reassurance of a familiar image, fuzzed over with layers that remind you of your own story. With photography as the main building block for the composition, I add lots of texture to abstract the image away from the particular.
Familiar Territory
Work that looks backward, reminiscent of home & safety, of history and origins. This is work that gives me breathing space, both in the creating and the viewing. When I abstract the landscape just a bit, I hope that you see the familiarity and comfort as well.
Future Wanderings
With clues from the landscape, but no physical evidence, these digital collages have signposts, mark-making, and decisions embedded in their layers. They represent the idea of us finding our way, of making different choices over time.
Grids
This series of work, created over a three year period, explores the interaction of handmade collages, a gridded composition, and a square format. Paper collages were scanned to use as base and intermediary layers, adding texture and abstraction to my usual photography; scans of printmaking and painting, as well as ephemera from my family history, were gleefully thrown in the mix.
