Liz Jackson
Ompah, Ontario
Abstract painter in Eastern Ontario. Rock, water and tree lover. Represented by Sivarulrasa Gallery, Almonte, Ontario, Canada
MessageLiz Jackson is an artist based in the heart of the Canadian Shield, where ancient rock, wind-swept pines, and shimmering waters breathe life into her work. After a fulfilling career in healthcare, Liz made a life-changing decision to follow her creative path, embracing her art with a “now or never” resolve.
Initially, her work was rooted in traditional landscape painting, emphasizing structure and composition. However, Liz soon felt drawn to the expressive world of abstraction, where she found her true artistic rhythm. Today, she focuses on creating abstract mixed-media pieces that reflect the raw beauty of her surroundings. Working with oil, cold wax, and various other materials, she uses mark-making and texture to evoke the essence of stone, forest, and water in her art. Liz finds inspiration in the quiet moments of life, shared with her partner and their dog, whether on a peaceful paddle or exploring snowy trails.
Statement
The land of the Canadian Shield—the rocks, trees, and waters—surrounds me, enduring and ever-changing. Its textures and colors, shifting quietly through the seasons, resonate deeply within me, offering both grounding and peace in an often-uncertain world.
While my studio view serves as the starting point for my work, I aim not to represent the landscape, but to capture its essence: the rhythms and emotional pull that I feel. I work intuitively, through gestural mark-making and a layered, exploratory process. What begins in chaos slowly evolves into a visual harmony that reflects the quiet transformations I observe in nature.
My practice incorporates mixed media, including oil paint, cold wax, acrylics, graphite, charcoal, ink, pastel, and collage. Each material contributes its own voice to the unfolding dialogue on the canvas. Through abstraction, I distill the energy and spirit of the natural world into a visual language that is both personal and universal.
Having transitioned from a career in healthcare, I committed myself fully to my artistic path, studying with various artists to develop a strong technical foundation. While my earlier work was more representational, I’ve increasingly embraced abstraction, where I continue to find both challenge and freedom through a deeper connection to the land that is always a part of me.
