Flowers of Film is an ode to cinema—a vibrant mural that celebrates the enduring relationship between storytelling and nature. When the creative team at Aspen Grove invited me to create a piece for the Alamo Drafthouse, I knew it had to be a tribute to film. What better way than through a bouquet that honors some of the most iconic floral cameos in movie history?
From Gene Wilder nibbling a daffodil cup in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, to the pansies in Dallas, the roses in American Beauty, and Dorothy falling asleep in the field of poppies in The Wizard of Oz—these moments have stayed with me. I’ve also added personal touches, including an iris, cottonwood leaves and buds, and a few Colorado pollinators.
The mural’s bouquet, cradled in an earthen vase surrounded by film reel, blends cinematic nostalgia with local pride. It features nods to our home state, including the Columbine and Aspen leaves—symbols that reflect the strong local roots of the Aspen Grove community.
Spray-painted across 1650 square feet, this mural is meant to be both a visual love letter to film and a joyful offering to the community. I hope it brings color, memory, and delight to all who pass by for many years to come!
