About Lise Karin Jensen

Biography

I was born in Tromsø in 1966. I moved to the Eastern part of Norway in 1986, and after 22 years in Sarpsborg, I relocated to Moss in 2018. As a painter, I would describe myself as intuitiv. I start by selecting colors based on complementary pairs, and then gradually develop the result. It often leads to the creation of some imaginary figures. When I photograph, my focus is on nature, such as flowers, trees, water, or buildings.

Experience

At an early age, I developed an interest in painting through my father and I have been painting and doing photography as a hobby for approximately 25 years. From the ages of 13 to 18 I worked during the Festspillene i Nord-Norge (Festival of North Norway) in a department that featured art exhibitions, collaborating with many artists. Although during those years my responsibilities mainly involved activities for children. This experience led me to pursue a two-year cultural education program that focused on organizing exhibitions, art history, and more. After those two years I decided to continue my studies in pedagogy (cand.paed) at the University in Oslo. Moss art assocation, selection committee and assistant mediator

Process

Art is a form of language that says something about who I am. The beginning of the process of creating an image can be somewhat different, either:

1. that I imagine in my mind some shapes, surfaces and/or colors that I want to research further (an intuitive process) or

2. that I take as a starting point elements from nature, places and/or phenomena that have/had a meaning in my life or that have captured my curiosity during my life.

In both cases, I abstract "what I see" so that the expression becomes mine.

I prefer to create colorful surfaces and shapes that have a combination of "the worn/old" against tight lines and shapes. Worn/old shapes can in themselves be perceived as different spaces/levels of all phases of life and a lived life, but also as spaciousness and tolerance. Through tight lines and shapes, the need for clarity and system in life is expressed.

In other words, a balance between what you cannot plan to control and what you can plan.

I spend a lot of time in the beginning exploring the choice of main colors, composition and making paper models of the main element/s before I start drawing and/or painting.

I often prefer technical acrylic and mixed media, to create the most life and depth in a picture.

Colors themselves are energy and the choice often falls on combinations that contribute to depth experiences that harmonize with each other. I often start with one or two colors and make further assessments along the way on what may or may not fit with the theme/main elements. The remaining color choices are made along the way to adjust towards a whole.
