Lisa Hess Hesselgrave’s work focuses on still life, figures, landscapes and the intersection of those subjects. Although representational the work is shaped by strong abstract qualities.
Hesselgrave received an MFA from the Yale University School of Art and a BFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Her work has been shown throughout the US in many venues including the National Academy of Design, Equity Gallery, and The Painting Center. She has been awarded residencies at the Virginia Center for the Arts, the Vermont Studio Center, the Millay Colony for the Arts, and the Seaside Institute, Florida. She recently completed a three week residency in Tétouan, Morocco. In addition to her studio practice Hesselgrave teaches Visual Arts at colleges and universities in Connecticut and New York.
Hesselgrave lives with her family in and old house, near the edge of the woods, where she continues to do work that experiments and evolves, while maintaining a disciplined adherence to craft and a sensitive pursuit of personal content.
