John Copnall (1928-2007) is known for his large-scale abstract oil paintings, characterised by bold colour, sweeping gestures and a strong sense of physical energy. Using oil paint, Copnall built up layered surfaces with drips, splashes and broad brushstrokes, allowing the material itself to remain visible. This emphasis on the act of painting and the behaviour of paint on the canvas places his work firmly within the tradition of post-war abstract expressionism in Britain.
