Victor Pasmore (1908 -1998) was a central figure in the development of abstraction in Britain. Beginning as a figurative painter in the 1930s, he moved decisively towards non-figurative art after the Second World War, creating rigorously constructed reliefs and paintings that explored geometry, balance and spatial rhythm. Closely connected with fellow modernists such as Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Adrian Heath, Pasmore helped to shape a new visual language for post-war British art, drawing on international abstraction while remaining deeply engaged with the British landscape and architectural space.
