Anthony Benjamin (1931-2002) was primarily a painter and printmaker of abstracts. Born in Boarhunt, Hampshire he studied art at the Regent Street Polytechnic, London and then in the Paris studio of Fernand Leger 1951. In 1955 he settled in St Ives, Cornwall. He exhibited widely including a one man show at the Newlyn Art Gallery 1958 and at Gimpel Fils. His work is held internationally, including numerous examples in the Tate Gallery, the British Council, Government Art Collection, and MOMA New York.
Influenced by surrealism and geometric abstraction, his bold, colourful compositions explore dynamic forms and balance, blending rational structure with emotional fluidity. His work reflects a dialogue between the rational and the emotional, inviting viewers to engage with both the structured elements of his compositions and the fluidity of his colour and texture.
