As rain clouds from a nighttime deluge dissipated that morning, we hiked beneath the chalky cliffs of the mountain the ranchers call "White", opalescent against the blue gray sky over the Davis Mts of Far West Texas. I snapped an iPhone photo of White Mountain posing against the dramatic sky, then rushed back to my studio and began painting.
My goal was not to lose the light of the mountain, so even though the foreground is extremely detailed and the clouds are bright, the chert-lined mountain glows a pearly greeting to the viewer.
