Clouds build over this Davis Mountains pasture, freshly green from recent monsoon rains. At my easel, I enjoyed the light breeze of the late summer afternoon in the high country, and marveled at how many shades of green were on suddenly on display. I had to make my painting decisions fast, then stick with them, because the light and shadow kept changing so rapidly with the building storm. Was my painting about that storm? Or about the tapestry of green below? I decided to go with the greens. We don't see green out here long, only a few weeks in a good summer, so it deserved some appreciation that day. While the clouds eventually command attention here, it's the sense of immersion in summer that you feel as your eye travels that faint road through green. Decisions like that are what make plein air paintings so fresh and appealing!
