Purple prickly pear spots the desert of Big Bend with lively, lush growth and unexpected color. This cactus had a heart-shaped pad. Looking closer, I realized how intricately inter-connected the soft pads, with their needle-like spines really were. Each well-armed cactus pad provides protection for those around it. (A pointed lesson from nature!)
