Santa Elena Canyon holds the Rio Grande between towering rock walls as the sun shoots out its last rays of light. Part of the magic of this canyon is the ever-changing color, and with sunset comes a buttery softness that calms and soothes the mighty river. While I’ve seen the canyon’s many moods in many seasons, I did this painting from a photo I took on our first trip to Big Bend National Park in 1980. This first gentle meeting of artist and river is the way I still think of Santa Elena and the Big River it holds within.
