Driving the River Road along the border between Lajitas and Presidio is different every time, and on this wintry day, the Rio Grande wore a sheen of silver over pale blue. We like to stop frequently along the winding road through Big Bend Ranch State Park and do short, exploratory hikes to appreciate the nuances of this rugged, diverse stretch of desert filled with intimate niches where life flourishes. I clambered slightly downhill and examined unseasonal wildflowers tucked into a cranny in the rock, then carefully stood back up on the steep slope. Before me the river glistened, silver against the vast, rugged land. Wow.This contrast between hidden features like tiny flowers and large, sweeps of majesty like this river is part of the magic that is the desert.
