A tumble of light-washed rocks invites you to kick off your boots, wiggle your toes in the sand and rest in the shade. These boulders (and many more!) are in Guadalupe National Park, a remote island of high desert that's a hiker's paradise, except for the ever-present sun reminding you that the road to hell is also an option. My favorite trail in the Guadalupe's is Devil's Hall, with its Devil's Staircase inviting you upward, mostly in the shade but you never know when you'll step right back into bright sunlight. These rocks and the soft sand beneath them could be anywhere though. Texas hill country, the southern Rockies, the Texas Panhandle are all full of rocky refuges, tucked away and hiding and welcoming the traveler to cool their heels a minute as shade filters colors onto the enclosing rocks.
The square format and limited space of this archival board was a perfect match to my subject. Let the dark diagonal cracks in these rocks pull you in, then bask in the gentle colors of tranquility. This is not only a spark of life for a room, it's a meditative painting that will always welcome you back.
Several coats of archival matte varnish protect this watercolor and eliminate the need for glass. The archival board is sturdy enough to display on a table easel or shelf without framing.
