Point of Rocks was the first rest stop and watering hole on the Overland/ Butterfield Trail from Fort Davis to El Paso. Before that, the once flourishing Bald Rock Spring offered welcome respite along a centuries-old Spanish trade route from Mexico to Santa Fe. The landmark rock still lures travelers to rest and picnic in the shade, a reminder to take a deep breath and enjoy the moment in the high desert. In this small painting, the clouds converge on the rock as if to crown it in recognition of its long service. In the Texas borderlands, it's common to see such a V-shape of clouds pointing to a mountain peak (or vice versa!) connecting solid land with the ever-moving, ever-changing atmosphere.
This watercolor is on an archival board. Several coats of archival matte varnish protect it without the need for glass (nice!)
