Late afternoon is my favorite time in West Texas. This Big Bend landscape is a view from along the road into Panther Junction from the Terlingua/Study Butte entrance to Big Bend National Park. As we leisurely wound thru the park, the low winter sun painted its glow into the earth for a few special minutes.
I didn't change the color, didn't amplify the reds. It's really that magical out there!
I started this large pastel landscape painting with a wash of red orange, followed by rich violet darks to indicate the rocks. That under-painting gives this large pastel landscape an inner glow, so the sense of warm, transient light shines through.
