Bluebonnets, with their regal stalks of shocking blue, stand tall against Texas grasses. Theses flowers are the undisputed monarchs of the landscape each spring, crowning pastures and roadsides and desert mesas in sapphire blooms. While pastures blanketed in blue come to mind when you think of these beloved wildflowers, a single stem such as this one holds elegance without the drama of a crowd.
In doing the original varnished watercolor as a mini painting, I used washes of background color to suggest other foliage and blooms, with my focus on painting a closeup of this rugged individual.
This small watercolor is on Aquabord, an archival surface. The painting has been sealed under several coats of archival varnish. No glass is needed.
