The stunning contrast of towering volcanic rock walls above these bluebonnets is augmented by thorny stalks of ocotillo that wave brilliant scarlet petals ten to twenty feet into the blue sky of the Chihuahuan Desert outside Big Bend National Park. One of our favorite places to watch sunset, I've painted this area repeatedly, but spring offers a very special insight into the breathtaking magic of this rugged borderlands vista.
This small pastel served as a prelude to an 8x10, "Bluebonnets on the Rocks", which has a different focus but almost the same view. Sometimes, I simply don't want to say goodbye to a landscape that I love!
