The vast borderlands of the Rio Grande and Big Bend National Park still hold signs of habitation in this harshly beautiful land, but those old structures are rapidly disappearing, victims of time. These simple ranch buildings beneath landmark Castellon Peak hint of busy days, simple lives and quiet, star-filled nights. A fire took these frame buildings a few years ago, so only photos and memories remain today, but the mountain still stands, waiting to greet the next sunrise and whatever life next comes to this remotely beautiful place.
I did this pencil drawing on heavily textured and delicately patterned handmade watercolor paper to add a vintage feel. Three edges are deckled, hand-torn (the top edge is smooth), and I suggest floating it in a frame so that those edges show.
